Nurse Selection Criteria Example
SC1. Demonstrated
ability to work with clients from culturally and linguistically diverse
communities in the context of the social determinants of health
You will find I have the ability to work with clients from
culturally and linguistically diverse communities with regards to the economic
and social conditions that effect group differences in health status. I have a
clear understanding of the risk factors involved in certain living and working
conditions, including vulnerability to disease and injury which was gained
through my tertiary studies (Bachelor of Nursing) and 12+ years professional
employment as a Registered Midwife for Polly Healthcare and as a Registered
Nurse with Molly Health Care and The Solly Hospital.
I have the ability to build effective working relationships
with clients through the facilitation of cooperation, providing impartial
advice regardless of clients cultural or language diversity, taking a long term
view of relationship building and using effective communication skills. In my
current role at Molly hospital, we frequently see women who can only be managed
by female staff due to religious reasons or who have a limited understanding of
the English language. I often engage the services of an interpreter to ensure
that the patient is fully informed of her choices in care. I have also had
incidences where women have arrived at the birth suite ready to deliver but who
have not been booked in with us. Because we have no prior information on the
patient or her medical history, this can cause quite a challenge. I take care
to ensure that the patient feels as comfortable as she can under the
circumstances and engage a support person or family member to aid
communication.
For example, I have had a women present to the Emergency
Department of the hospital with abdominal pains. It was discovered she was in
active labour, however the patient was unaware that she was pregnant. She had
arrived on a plan from Pakistan only 24
hours prior and had no medical history on her. She spoke limited English and
was afraid of male staff. She arrived at
the hospital with no support as she had moved to Australia with her husband
following an arranged marriage (the husband was not present). I employed the
services of an interpreter and formed a rapport with her. Through the interpreter
I was able to provide the patient with an understanding of what was happening
and what to expect. As the patient had no support in place and it was a
challenging birth, I stayed back an
extra shift to remain with her to deliver her first baby. The patient gave birth to a healthy girl who
was put up for adoption. Although this was a challenging situation due to the
different cultural needs and limited understanding of English, it was also
rewarding situation as the child was born healthy and I was able to provide
emotional support to the patient.
2. Demonstrated capacity to provide training and
education programs and conduct health promotion activities individually or as
part of a team.
Providing training and education programs to patients was part
of my key responsibilities as the Community Registered Nurse at Molly Heath
Center. During my 4+ year tenure, I was regularly called upon to provide advice
to clients and community groups on topics such as improving general diet and
exercise, sanitation and hygiene, Diabetes Management and providing information
to parents on childhood immunisations. I was required to identify the
particular health care needs of communities within our target area, attend
community meetings and health fairs to build relationships with community
members and provide presentations and group training to these community groups
on the targeted topic. Though I
presented the information individually, it required a team effort between myself
and the various community groups to make the presentations happen.
In my current position as a Registered Midwife at Polly HealthCare
I am responsible for planning, providing and evaluating educational programs
for other nursing staff and health care teams. I’m also responsible for providing
information sessions to clients on the physical and emotional processes during
pregnancy, labour, birth and postpartum periods, counseling women regarding
their nutritional requirements during pregnancy and providing contraceptive and
family planning information to postpartum patients. I also run tours of our
maternity facility for new patients and answer any questions of concerns they
may have.
I should also mention that during my tertiary studies at
University I was involved in numerous health promotions activities and fund
raising efforts. For example, on a Saturday morning, my team would attend
shopping centers and other high traffic areas to promote diabetes and heart
health. We would conduct testing of passersby’s sugar levels and provide information
on Diabetes prevention.
